What are Gaviscon Tablets?
Gaviscon Tablets are chewable tablets designed to alleviate heartburn and acid reflux. Simply chew and swallow these tablets after meals and before bedtime to relieve annoying heartburn, anytime and anywhere. Available in delightful strawberry and peppermint flavors, these tablets are suitable for individuals over 12 years old.
What is heartburn?
Heartburn, a common condition, is actually a symptom of acid reflux. Many people suffer from heartburn or acid reflux, which, while usually not serious, can be highly bothersome. Common symptoms of acid reflux, alongside heartburn, may include:
- Sore throat
- Hoarse voice
- Cough
- Hiccups
- Bad breath
- Bad taste in the mouth
- Bloating
- Nausea
How will Gaviscon Chewable Tablets help to ease my heartburn?
Gaviscon Chewable Tablets contain three active ingredients: sodium alginate, sodium hydrogen carbonate, and calcium carbonate. These components act as “reflux suppressants,” creating a protective layer over stomach contents, including stomach acid. This prevents stomach acid from rising up the esophagus and irritating its lining, addressing acid reflux symptoms at their root.
Can I take these tablets if I’m pregnant or breastfeeding?
Gaviscon Tablets are safe for use during pregnancy or breastfeeding. However, it is advisable to consult your doctor or pharmacist before using this product during this time.
Can I take these tablets if I’m taking other medication?
If you are taking other medications, avoid taking Gaviscon Tablets within 2 hours after taking your other medication. Consult your doctor or pharmacist before taking Gaviscon if you are on any other medications, especially:
- Antibiotics, including tetracyclines and quinolones like norfloxacin
- Iron preparations
- Antifungals, e.g., ketoconazole
- Heart medications like Digoxin and beta blockers
- Rheumatoid arthritis medication like Penicillamine
- Glucocorticoids for inflammatory and autoimmune disorders
- Neuroleptics for mental illness
- Thyroid hormones
- Chloroquine for malaria
- Estramustine for prostate cancer
- Bisphosphonates for osteoporosis
How to take Gaviscon Tablets When experiencing heartburn or acid reflux symptoms, take 2 – 4 tablets after each meal and before bedtime. These tablets can be chewed without water. If symptoms persist after 7 days, consult your doctor. Do not exceed the recommended daily dose.
When should this product not be used?
Children under 12 should not take Gaviscon Tablets unless advised by a doctor. Avoid this product if you are allergic to sodium alginate, sodium hydrogen carbonate, calcium carbonate, or any listed ingredients. Each four-tablet dose contains 11.08mmol (254.84mg) of sodium and 3.2mmol of calcium. If you are on a low-sodium diet or have significant kidney or heart disease, consult your doctor or pharmacist before using this product. Each tablet contains 8.8mg of aspartame; if you have phenylketonuria (PKU), consult your doctor or pharmacist before using this product.
Do these tablets have any side effects?
Like all medications, Gaviscon Chewable Tablets can cause side effects, though not everyone experiences them. These may include allergic reaction symptoms such as:
- Skin rash
- Itching
- Difficulty breathing or swallowing
- Dizziness
- Swelling of the face, lips, tongue, throat, etc.

How to store this product Store in a cool, dry place below 25°C. Keep in the original packaging and do not use if the expiry date has passed. Keep out of reach and sight of children.
