Amorolfine 5% w/v is used to treat:
Mild, Grade 1, & OSI – 0-5 fungal infections of the nails (onychomycosis) without the involvement of the nail root (nail matrix) – See images for what a typical mild nail infection may look like
The Onychomycosis Severity Index (OSI) score is obtained by multiplying the score for the area of involvement (range, 0-5) by the score for the proximity of disease to the matrix (range, 1-5). Mild onychomycosis corresponds to a score of 1 through 5; moderate, 6 through 15; and severe, 16 through 35.
The active substance in Amorolfine 5% w/v is amorolfine (as the hydrochloride) which belongs to a group of medicines known as antifungals.
Amorolfine 5% w/v kills a wide variety of fungi that can cause nail infections. Fungal nail infection is likely to result in discoloured (white, yellow, or brown), thick or brittle nails, although their appearance can vary considerably.

Active Ingredient:

How It Works:
Amorolfine belongs to a class of medicines known as antifungals. It works by inhibiting the growth of fungi, specifically targeting the fungal cell membrane, which is essential for the fungus’s survival. With regular application, Amorolfine 5% Nail Lacquer helps to eliminate the infection and prevent it from spreading, allowing healthy nail growth to resume.
Dosage and Application:
- Adults (18 years and above): Apply once or twice weekly to the affected nails, following the preparation and application instructions provided with the product.
- Children and Adolescents: Amorolfine 5% Nail Lacquer is not recommended for use in individuals under 18 years of age unless directed by a healthcare professional.
Instructions for Use:
- Prepare the Nail: Before applying the lacquer, clean the affected nail(s) and remove any loose or damaged nail material using a nail file (provided with the product). Use a nail cleaner or swab to remove any remaining nail dust and cleanse the nail.
- Apply the Lacquer: Using the provided spatula, apply a thin, even layer of the lacquer over the entire surface of the affected nail(s). Allow the lacquer to dry for approximately 3 minutes.
- Reapply as Needed: Reapply the lacquer once or twice a week until the infection has cleared and the nail has fully regrown. This may take several months, depending on the severity of the infection.
- Clean the Applicator: After each use, clean the applicator thoroughly to prevent contamination.
Side Effects:
As with all medications, Amorolfine 5% Nail Lacquer may cause side effects, although not everyone will experience them. Common side effects include:
- Mild and temporary nail discolouration.
- Brittle or damaged nails.
- Mild skin irritation around the treated nail(s).
If you experience severe or persistent side effects, such as a rash, swelling, or signs of an allergic reaction, discontinue use and seek medical advice immediately.
Warnings and Precautions:
- Do not use if you are allergic to Amorolfine or any of the other ingredients in this product.
- Only use for mild nail infections, if unsure please see your GP or Pharmacist
- For external use only. Do not ingest.
- Avoid contact with eyes, ears, and mucous membranes. If accidental contact occurs, rinse thoroughly with water.
- Do not apply nail polish or artificial nails on the treated nails during the course of treatment.
- If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, consult your doctor before using this product.
- Keep out of reach of children.
Drug Interactions:
There are no known interactions between Amorolfine 5% Nail Lacquer and other medications. However, it is always advisable to inform your healthcare provider of any other medications or treatments you are currently using to ensure safe use.
Storage:
Store in a cool, dry place below 30°C, and keep the bottle tightly closed when not in use. Do not use after the expiry date printed on the packaging.
Additional Information:
For best results, continue using Amorolfine 5% Nail Lacquer for the full duration recommended by your healthcare provider, even if the symptoms seem to have improved. Fungal nail infections can be stubborn, and premature discontinuation of treatment may result in the infection returning.
